Green Events Consulting was founded in the fall of 2010 by 2010-11 Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Sustainability Chair Theo Gibbs and a team of Stanford students: Vincent Chen, Susie Choi, Aurelia Heitz, Molly Oshun, and Noemi Walzebuck. We were inspired to create a program that would aid student groups throughout the entire event-planning process, rather than merely giving guidelines and directions on sustainable event-planning and expecting students to pursue these goals and implement these standards themselves. By creating this program, we hope to engage the Stanford community in the campus conversation about sustainability, both by recruiting students to serve as consultants as well as by working together with student groups and leaders across a variety of subject areas.
Our Vision
Green Events Consulting envisions a campus where all events abide by a new standard of sustainable practices and metrics and where event attendees are actively aware of these measures.
Our Mission Statement
Green Events Consulting is a program for Stanford students that provides consulting services, financial support, and expertise to guide campus event planning. We educate students about and help them reduce the negative environmental impact of their events.

GEC Structure
2011-12 GEC Staff
Susie Choi, Internal Director
- 2012 (Senior), Political Science, minor in Creative Writing
- Susie became interested in sustainability during her freshman year through her work with the ASSU Executive Cabinet's sustainability team. Since then, she has worked on various sustainability projects, including Green Store (greenstore.stanford.edu) and Green Events Consulting. Outside the area of sustainability, she has a set of diverse interests, including the following topics: grammar and rhetoric, US government, American history, law, and business problems. She has attempted to integrate her interests in political science, law, and the environment through her honors thesis, which explores the effect of electoral competition in states on the stringency of their hazardous waste regulations. In her free time, Susie enjoys writing (poetry, fiction, blog posts), food-gawking, running, listening to and binging on music, playing cello and piano, spending time with friends, taking pictures, and contributing to the campus community as much as possible.
Noemi Walzebuck, External Director
- 2013 (Junior), Earth Systems, minor in International Relations
- Noemi is passionate about environmental research and activism and has been heavily involved running various campaigns through Students for a Sustainable Stanford and Engineers for a Sustainable World. She currently works as a research assistant for the Department of Biology and absolutely loves being involved with GEC! In her spare time she plays on the Stanford Club Tennis team and enjoys outdoor photography and cycling.
Sharad Bharadwaj, Research & Metrics Officer
- 2014 (Sophomore), Undeclared but leaning towards Energy Resources Engineering
- Academically, Sharad is interested in the interplay between energy and human health, especially in the developing, urbanizing third world. Outside of school, he likes to play tennis, pretend to know what he's doing when he plays violin, and watch a lot of TV. Sharad likes hanging out with his friends, oftentimes involving said TV, and once in a while they go explore SF, do something fun. His hometown is Foster City, and it’s the best. The end.
Sean Foorman, Marketing & Outreach Officer
- 2012 (Senior), Earth Systems (Oceans Track), minor in Environmental Engineering
- As a senior at Stanford, Sean's experience has been quite the bumpy ride; over the past three years, he has switched majors twice, each time for various reasons. However, each time he has been confident in the fact that his newest choice offered the greatest potential to combine his fascination with marine ecosystems and his passion for environmental conservation and sustainability into one coherent education. In other words, he strongly believes that it is never too late to make a change if you honestly feel it might improve your outlook towards the future. So, he is committed to being open to new ideas and new people, in whatever form they happen to take, and the changes they might bring about. Coming from Colorado, he is proudly dedicated to enjoying the outdoors through all kinds of sports, as well as hiking, camping, snowboarding, etc., and as a result his dedication to preserving those "endangered" outdoors has grown right along with him.
William Greenbaum, Project Leader
- 2013 (Junior), Mechanical engineering
- William likes nature, sleeping, and cats. But let's be real; everyone does. William keeps himself busy by working with the Green Living Council as president, playing frisbee with the ultimate team, and keeping up on politics. He loves to debate, so be careful what kind of conversations you start around him. He's also a mean Words with Friends/Scrabble player
Molly Hayes, Financial Officer
- 2014 (Sophomore), Energy Resources Engineering, minor in Classics
- Molly spends most of her time rowing on the Women's Varsity Lightweight Rowing team here at Stanford. She also is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. When she is not involved in any activities associated with these groups (or GEC!), she likes to take naps. She probably takes enough naps for it to count as a hobby.. Besides that, Molly enjoys skiing and spending time outside - whether that involves rowing, running, relaxing in the California sun, or just taking a walk.
Jessica Liu, Operations Officer
- 2014 (Sophomore), Undecided
- Jessica has been involved in sustainability initiatives since her freshman year in high school. Outside of GEC, she is
also a part of the Society of Women Engineers and is interested in the areas of computer science, finance, and English literature. Her hobbies include almost every type of outdoor athletic activity (running, hiking, rowing, tumbling gracefully down ski slopes, etc.), reading, cooking, and watching movies.
Sarthak Misra, Project Leader
- 2013 (Junior), Management Science & Engineering, interest in alternative energy (particularly wind and solar)
- From Mumbai, India, Sarthak believes that energy and specifically the lack of clean energy is a major problem faced by the developing world. He is currently a pursuing a wind energy power production project in southern India. On campus, he has been a member of the ASSU sustainability team over the past three years and is currently the Chair of Sustainability for the ASSU.
Christina Zhou, Project Leader
- Sophomore (2014), Environmental Engineering
- Christina is passionate about sustainability, and main areas of interest include: water resources, biomimicry/cradle to cradle design, and sustainability in an urban context, especially regarding justice. She is also a member of Students for a Sustainable Stanford Common Origins (one of Stanford's hip hop dance groups) and a guzheng ensemble. With the free time that remains, she likes to play piano, listen to all kinds of music, go running, sing loudly and badly, read books/articles on everything, and wonder what she is going to do with her life.
2011-12 GEC Consultants
Julia Barrero
- 2014 (Sophomore), History, minor in Spanish
- Julia's hobbies include running, yoga, and playing sports like soccer and swimming. When she isn't feeling so active, she also very much enjoys listening to music, reading the newspaper, watching a movie, or simply being in the company of her friends and family.
Jessie Duan
- 2015 (Freshman), Computer Science and Energy Resources Engineering
- Jessie is from Raleigh, North Caroline. This past summer, she worked as a field manager canvassing for Environment North Carolina. On campus, she is also involved in Stanford Wushu and Stanford's Society of Women Engineers. Her other interests include playing violin and guitar.
Shannon Eddy
- 2015 (Freshman), International Relations
- Shannon is a freshman who plans to major in international relations. Before coming to Stanford, she took a year to live in Costa Rica, Peru, and Ireland where she taught at local schools, volunteered in conservation and sustainability in the rainforest, and worked at an organic farm. She is an environmental activist and works with refugees, and in her spare time she enjoys tennis, creative writing, and baking.
Annie Kramer
- 2012 (Senior), American Studies , minor in Modern Languages (Italian and French)
- The walls of Annie's compact dorm room speak volumes. They tell the tales of high-alpine trekking (and trudging) in Bhutan, Nepal, Corsica, and beyond, of endurance running through the Hoh Rainforest in the United States' westernmost reaches, of conversing in multiple tongues, and of farming--and eating--Icelandic vegetables pulsing with health and life. While Annie is apt to name red rock as her preferred terrain feature, her ample days spent on Alta, Utah's powder-clad slopes have cultivated in her a deep love for all things snow-covered. An aspiring writer, linguist, and [part-time] ski bum, Annie took a leave of absence from Stanford during the 2010-2011 academic year to travel, ski, and to work for Friends of Alta, a small non-profit land trust organization that seeks to preserve Alta's environmental vitality and uniquely unspoiled ambiance. As a Consultant with GEC, Annie looks forward to further developing the skills to serve as a practiced steward of the land, sea, and sky: for ourselves, for the living Earth, and for our shared future.
Laura Kurt
- 2014 (Sophomore), Civil or Environmental Engineering, minor in Economics
- Laura is a member of the Stanford Polo Club (yes, like horses and Ralph Lauren) and is also a member of Students for a Sustainable Stanford. She loves to read, hates to write, and can generally be found watching some sappy medical drama on Netflix.
Elliott Lui
- 2013 (Junior), Computer Science
- As a computer science major, Elliott have pretty strong interests in technology, software, and all things bits and bytes. Outside of his major, he is passionate about making the world a better place by taking care of the environment, poverty alleviation through microfinance, and bringing smiles to people’s faces. He also love dogs, cycling, running, and golf.
Brian Miranda
- 2015 (Freshman), considering Atmosphere and Energy Engineering
- For the past few years, Brian has grown very interested in efforts against climate change and initiatives focused on sustainability, especially in the energy space. He hopes to pursue these interests further while at Stanford. In his spare time, Brian enjoys playing soccer, table tennis, Pictionary, and golf.
Sumit Mitra
- 2014 (Sophomore), Energy Resources Engineering, minor in Computer Science
- Sumit's interests include energy and education, and his hobbies are basketball and sketch comedy.
Alka Nath
- 2015 (Freshman), Undecided
- Alka's hobbies include reading, biking, going to school, spending time with my friends, playing soccer, playing squash, listening to music, climbing trees, watching TV, and writing.
Catherine Zaw
- 2015 (Freshman), Undecided
- One of Catherine's major goals in life is to help promote sustainability as our population grows and we need more resources. She is a major foodie, loves cooking food and eating it too, especially desserts and broccoli. Catherine enjoys creative writing, and if she is not doing that, then she is swimming. She is into alternative rock and electronic music and movies with twisted plots. Surprise parties are her forte.
